What types of surface is lime wash suitable for?

Lime wash is particularly suitable for absorbent, mineral-based substrates where a breathable and natural finish is desired. It is ideal for lime- and cement-based plasters as well as existing mineral-based coatings. Other mineral substrates, such as clay plaster or concrete, may also be suitable depending on their condition. To ensure the paint adheres properly, the substrate should be dry, clean and sound.

Whitewash: Advantages and disadvantages

Lime wash is a mineral-based coating made from hydrated white lime. It combines a natural look with breathable properties and is particularly suitable for damp rooms, cellars or historic buildings. Thanks to the use of a limited number of raw materials and the absence of solvents, plasticisers, preservatives and synthetic binders, lime wash is particularly well suited to people with sensitivities and anyone who values a natural indoor climate and mineral-based building materials. At the same time, the substrate must be chosen appropriately and the application carried out with care.

Advantage Nachteil
Naturally mineral-based: Lime plaster is free from solvents, plasticisers and preservatives. The substrate is crucial: Lime wash is not suitable for every substrate; it should only be applied to emulsion paints after testing.
Breathable: Promotes a balanced indoor climate thanks to its high water vapour permeability. Preparation is essential: The substrate must be clean, dry and sound.
Suitable for damp rooms: Its high alkalinity provides natural protection against mould. Careful application is required: Correct application is crucial for an even finish.
Wipe-resistant surface: Once dry, it forms an elegant matt, non-chalking finish. Opacity depends on the substrate: Depending on the absorbency, several coats may be required.

Applying lime wash: step by step

Preparing the surface

Preparing the surface

Step 1

Before painting, the surface must be inspected and prepared. Loose areas, old wallpaper and poorly adhering paint must be removed. On non-mineral surfaces, it is advisable to apply a test coat to check adhesion. Surfaces such as emulsion paints must have a matt finish that can absorb water.

Small cracks or uneven areas can be repaired beforehand using a suitable mineral-based filler. For highly absorbent, sandy or chalky surfaces, it is advisable to apply a primer using a silicate fixative.

Preparing and tinting lime paint

Step 2

Before use, the lime wash must be stirred thoroughly. For coloured interior coatings, it can be tinted using suitable mineral tinting pastes (lw-oxyd). The recommended maximum addition of 4 per cent should not be exceeded. Tinting is not intended for exterior coatings.

Apply lime wash

Step 3

The product is applied using a roller, brush, paintbrush, flat brush or a suitable spray gun. For the first coat, the lime paint can be slightly diluted with water if necessary. When using airless spraying, the lime paint must first be sieved without pressure using a 0.5 mm sieve.

The top coat is applied undiluted. To ensure the surface appears smooth and even, work should be carried out without long interruptions.

Build up opacity

Step 4

Lime wash only achieves its final effect as it dries. It is not unusual for the coat of paint to appear patchy or not fully opaque at first. Depending on the surface, its absorbency and the desired finish, several coats may be necessary.

Leave to dry and then touch up

Step 5

Under normal conditions, baufan lime wash dries after around 5 hours. Further coats of lime wash can then be applied without any problems.

If a different coating system is to be applied later, the existing layer of lime paint should first be washed off or brushed off.

Technical information sheet

Area of application

Mineral-based lime wash made from hydrated white lime, for interior and exterior surfaces. Smudge-resistant, breathable, and ideal for damp rooms and heritage conservation projects.

Preparation

For all mineral substrates such as lime- and cement-based plasters and coatings. The substrate must be alkali-resistant, dry, clean, sound, and free from dust and grease. Remove loose material, old wallpaper and poorly adhering coatings from the substrate. Pre-treat highly absorbent, sandy and chalky substrates with baufan Silicate Fixative. If in doubt, carry out a test coat. Repair cracks, holes and uneven areas with a suitable baufan filler.

Processing

Stir well before use and apply with a roller, brush, paintbrush, flat brush or suitable spray equipment. If required, the paint may be diluted with up to 15 per cent water for a primer coat; apply undiluted as a top coat. Clean tools with clean water immediately after use.

Drying time:
approx. 5 hours under normal conditions (+20 °C, 65% relative humidity, moderately absorbent substrate); drying time will be correspondingly longer under unfavourable conditions.

Tinting:
For interior use, the paint can be tinted with up to 4% universal tinting concentrates (LW Oxyd types). Do not tint for exterior use.

Notes on airless spray application:
The lime wash must first be sieved without pressure (mesh size 0.5 mm).
Machine filter: 30 mesh
Spray angle: 40°–50°
Nozzle: 0.025–0.027
Spray pressure: 120–180 bar

Consumption

Smooth surfaces/fine-grained plaster → from 150 ml/m²
Determine the exact amount required by carrying out a test application on the surface.

Storage

Store the container tightly sealed in a cool place, but away from frost.

Notes

Application temperature:
+5 °C to +30 °C for the material, ambient air and substrate.

Before use, refer to the safety information in the safety data sheet. Up-to-date safety data sheets are available on our website at www.baufan.de.

Keep out of the reach of children. Cover surfaces not to be painted (glass, wood, etc.) and protect them from splashes. Ensure adequate ventilation during application and drying. When spraying, use an A2/P2 combination filter. Avoid eating, drinking and smoking whilst using the paint. Do not allow the product to enter the sewerage system, watercourses or the ground.

When used outdoors, the durability of the coating depends heavily on weather conditions. The lime wash can be modified with synthetic resin by adding baufan latex binder. This improves its scrub resistance and weather resistance. Do not mix with other paints.

baufan lime paint can be easily recoated with the same material. Before applying other types of coating, the lime paint should always be washed off or brushed away.

Disposal:
Only send completely empty containers for recycling. Dried-out material residues can be disposed of as household waste or as construction site waste. Dispose of liquid residues in accordance with EWC waste code No. 08 01 12.
